What Wins in Porsche 964 Pricing: a Rare Color or Tiptronic?
Updated: Jan 23, 2021
Porsche 964 C2 Coupes in a rare color with low miles are hot in the market right now, but will the Tiptronic transmission kill the price? We’ll soon find out as this 1991 Porsche 964 in the rare color of Turquoise Metallic (L35X) with only 19,000 miles, but with a Tiptronic transmission’s Bring-a-Trailer (BAT) auction comes to a close.
The car is currently bid to $37,000 with 9 hours left in the auction (approximate close at 3:30 p.m. January 22, 2021). According to the Sports Car Market price guide the median price of this model is $73,000. Based on previous BAT sales of Porsche 964 and 993’s with Tiptronic the hit could be 20% drop in price for the Tiptronic, but one could see as much as a 20% for the rare color. This would bring the price of the car to about $70,000 for a median priced and quality model.
Will this Porsche 964 in a rare color but with Tiptronic sell for the market correct $70,000?
The Turquoise Metallic color adds a lot of value as it is a 4-can rarity rating on Rennbow.org but with the Tiptronic and nicks, bruises, and paintwork it may struggle to reach this number. However the low miles are an added bonus. Even with the low miles though this car has needs as the radio output is poor, the power locks are inoperable and the air conditioning does not blow cold air. There is also seepage at the case bolts and transmission.
BAT Commentator @968Man inspected the car and reports that it is honestly represented and may actually be underrepresented. As a 40-year PCA member he states that this car “is not going to disappoint the next owner.”
As you would expect there are the usual comments that only if it was a manual, but I am surprised that there are not more comments about the Tiptronic. Most of the comments are about the great color combo of Turquoise Metallic over the linen leather interior. More comments are being made about the carpet having been replaced on such a low mileage car. Owner states that the original carpet was too difficult to keep clean in the light color.
A European commentator, @ErikDutch states that this would be a $80-90,000 car in Europe. I personally think it will have a hard time hitting the median price of $70,000 and will probably sell around the $60,000 mark.
We will see later this afternoon.
NOTE: The auction is complete and the car sold for $52,500. The Tiptronic won out over the rare color as the car was discounted 25% below the going market price.
