Rare Color, Low Numbers = High Priced Air-Cooled Porsche
RM Sotheby’s is featuring two Air-Cooled Porsches in Rare Color combinations and low production numbers that will bring high prices for similar Air-Cooled Porsches. In addition, RM Sotheby’s is offering a high quality Beck Spyder Replica for sale.
The June Open Roads online-only auction is underway with six days to go for bids. The auction ends June 30, 2021.
The first Air-Cooled Porsche with a rare color and low numbers is a Ferrari Yellow paint-to-sample (PTS) 1993 Porsche RS America. Only four PTS Yellow RS Americas were produced and this is the only one without a sunroof. The only options spec’d were air conditioning and Limited Slip Differential.
This RS America is expected to sell between $160,000 and $180,000. Normally a quality RS America sells in the range of $1250,000 so the rare color is bringing in excess of a 25% premium.
The other rare color and low numbers Air-Cooled Porsche on offer is a 1987 Black Porsche Turbo “Flat-Nose” Cabriolet. The rare color combination is that this Black Flat-Nose features a Lipstick Red leather interior. This Flat-Nose is one of only three produced Flat-Nose Cabriolets to feature the more powerful 930.66 engine.
According to the Sports Car Market Price Guide the median price for a 1987 Turbo Flat-Nose is $193,000. With an estimated sale price of $200,000 - $250,000 this offering is also expected to achieve premium pricing at a minimum of 10% but could also reach a 25% premium for its low numbers and rare color combination.
The third Air-Cooled car on sale is a Beck 550 Spyder Replica. It is not officially an Air-Cooled Porsche but I would describe it as a cousin since it is based on Porsche lineage. A Beck Spyder Replica is not normally something that RM Sotheby’s would trade in but it must have been packaged with another desirable car that would only be consigned to RM Sotheby’s if they also offer the Spyder.
The build for the Beck Spyder is described as high quality and offers a high-performance package that is probably driving the higher than normal pre-sale estimate of $40,000 - $50,000. The bid is currently at $20,000 so the final sale will be close to the pre-sale estimate.
