Are Air-Cooled Porsche Classic Prices Going up or Down?
The biggest story of the week was of course the non-sale of the Porsche Type 64, but there were other stories within vintage Porsche sales. The market seems to have flattened out compared to the hot rising market several years ago of air-cooled Porsches.
It seemed like everyone was trying to sell a 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster this year as every auction house seemed to have one on the auction block. Prices were from the market correct low $145,000 to a high of $375,000 on a pristine example of the last Porsche Speedster (der Letzte Speedster) produced.
Air Brigade members tend to own and drive in the sub-$100,000 market. There were no big surprises here as the G-Series 911 Carreras all priced in the $40,000 - $50,000 range. The softest market seemed to be the Porsche 912 as prices lagged behind their other Porsche cousins.
There were only two 914’s on auction, one 914-4 and one 914-6. The six failed to sell while the four hit estimate for a high price of $67,200. This price is high for a 914-4 but reflects a long term single car owner with extensive records and a great color combination.
Similar to the Porsche Speedster, every auction house in Monterey seemed to have a Porsche 930 Turbo. For the most part the prices were in the $115,000 - $196,000 normal range for the car though there was an outlier at Bonhams of only $76,160 on a 1987 930 Turbo 3.3 liter.
The big over-achiever this year was the 1967 Porsche 911S Rallye offered by RM Sotheby’s. The final sale was $912,500 against a pre-sale estimate of $250,000 - $325,000.
Porsche offered the Rallye package to customers to meet the FIA’s GT Group 3 regulations. This car eventually came into the hands of famed Porsche racer Bruce Jennings drove it on a daily basis. He only raced it once. The car is all original and unmolested.
There were several significant no sales beyond just the Type 64, most notably in the 1973 911 RS market. These have been collector gold at past collector car auctions but this year both RM Sotheby’s and Mecum had no-sales for their models of this highly valued Porsche.
Overall sales were off 34% for the year for all the 2019 Monterey Auction houses with sales of $245.5 million versus $370 million of last year. This is the lowest total since 2011. Analysts will be looking at the why with answers ranging from too many cars, to a softening collector car market.
