Porsche 914 1.8L Surprises with the Biggest Price Gain
A review of median prices that Porsche 914’s sold for in 2020 show that the Porsche 914 1.8 liter and Porsche 914-6 saw the highest price gains. The 914-6 is not a surprise but to see the often-overlooked 1974-1976 Porsche 914 1.8 liter as the price-gaining winner is a big surprise.
According to the Pocket Price Guide from Sports Car Market magazine, the 1.8 liter 914’s saw a median price of $15,500 in 2020, versus $13,000 in 2019, a 20% gain year over year. The 2.0 liter models also saw a gain; achieving a 9% increase in their median price to $21,500.
The Porsche 914-6 also experienced a big jump with a 40% increase in their median value to $123,000 versus the $88,000 median price of 2019. There are fewer 914-6’s sold so a few sales of high quality collector models can move the market for these types of gains.
Why the Porsche 914 1.8 liter Gained in Value in 2020
Sports Car Market uses public sales records to identify the median prices for each model. Air Brigade found it unusual that the 1.8 liter 914 recorded such gains but once sales were investigated at Bring-a-Trailer, RM Sotheby’s and Gooding & Co auctions it started to become clear why prices rose on the 1.8 liter models.
First, Porsche 914 2.0 liter models are rising in value to the over $20,000 mark that is a price level that tends to divide the weekend DIYer from the individual with a greater amount of disposable income that can justify a third fun car in the garage. Therefore, the broader market of under-$20,000 purchasers of Porsches are turning to the 1.8 liter 914 that is more affordable for their weekend Porsche ownership experience.
Second, higher quality 914 1.8 liters are coming to market as demonstrated by two of the models described further down the article that appeared on Bring-a-Trailer and at a RM Sotheby’s auction.
