Are Porsche 914's Gaining Respect in the Collector World?
Are Porsche 914’s finally gaining respect within the Porsche collector car market?
The prestigious Collector Car auction house, Gooding & Co is offering three Porsche 914 variants in their Geared Online auction slated to open today at 9:00 a.m. PDT. Granted two of the 914 offerings are sixes, but one is an estimated $50,000 four-cylinder model. For the Porsche 914 to be sold alongside top collector cars seems to indicate that the Porsche 914 has finally taken a seat at the “Big Boy Table.”
The 1972 Gemini Blue Porsche 914-6 with a factory-equipped M471 package (wide fender flares) is just one of 23 examples built by Porsche. It is equipped with the desirable type 911/83 Carrera RS 2.7 liter engine. It is expected to sell in the range of $125,000 - $175,000.
The other Porsche 914-6 may be the opportunity to own a six-cylinder 914 at an “affordable” price. The 1972 Black over Beige 914-6 is being offered without reserve and is expected to sell in the range of $50,000 - $75,000. It is in largely original condition with just 21,000 miles. It has been in static storage for the past two decades and has a couple modifications in the way of staggered Fuchs wheels and rectangular driving lights that probably accounts for its little lower than normal sales estimate. (I would expect a clean, original Porsche 914-6 to sell in the $70,000 - $90,000 range.)
I
n fact the low estimate for this 914-6 is the high estimate range for the lone four-cylinder 914 offering in the auction. The 1976 Porsche 914 2.0 being offered at auction with a sales estimate of $45,000 to $65,000. The big difference, is that the ’76 914 2.0 has a comprehensive restoration that was completed in 2017 and shows extremely well with the optional ski rack.
So, back to the original question: has the Porsche 914 finally gained the respect from the Porsche collector market? Yes, as evidenced at the Gooding auction; if the car is unique and of high quality. These are the underlying qualities of these three Porsche 914 offerings:
1. Porsche 914-6 with M471 is very rare
2. Largely Original 914-6 is unique
3. Comprehensive restored 914 2.0 offers a quality model
