Porsche 911 Longhood Pricing Hits a Downturn
After years of unprecedented growth the early Porsche 911 long hoods may have finally stabilized or even started a downturn. It is hard to understand pricing in 2020 because it is unknown whether it is a pricing trend or just Covid impacting prices.
Of the 20 models of air-cooled Porsche Longhoods tracked in the Pocket Price Guide from Sports Car Market magazine, we only have four models that increased in price, with six experiencing no change and 10 decreasing in price. This compares to the previous years prices that saw six increasing in price, ten with no change in price from the previous year and four decreasing in price.
The big winners among 911 Longhood pricing are the long wheelbase S and T coupes from 1969 - 1973. One long wheelbase Targa snuck in with a positive price gain due to the S configuration that is still the collector focus within these early 911’s.
The low performing models were the short wheelbase models from1964 - 1971 that all recorded no pricing change from the prior year or saw a decrease in price of anywhere from -7% to -22%.
The lowest median price for any of the 911 Longhoods are two Targa models, one a short wheel base car and one a long wheel base 911. The short wheelbase targa is the 1966 - 1968 2.0 liter with a median price of $70,000, while the long wheelbase model is a 1969 - 1971 911T 2.2 liter with a median price of $55.500.
If you are looking to buy with a protection of your money, your focus should be on the long wheelbase coupe, with the 2.2 or 2.4 liter engine. From an affordability standpoint the 1969-1971 2.2 liter coupe is the one to pursue.
