Does Olympic Blue Double the Price of a Porsche 914?
Based on two recent sales of Olympic Blue Porsche 914’s the color is driving sales that are double the value of a non-Olympic Blue Porsche 914.
At the Monterey Auctions, the sale by Mecum Auctions of an $80,000 1973 Porsche 914 1.7 in Olympic Blue was thought to be a fluke but just last week a similar 1974 Olympic Blue Porsche 914 with the 1.8-leter engine sold on Bring-a-Trailer (BAT) for over $50,000.
Under normal conditions a Porsche 914 1.8-liter sells for $15,000 - $20,000. The 2.0-liter commands a premium of $5,000 plus bringing average sale prices of $20,000 - $25,000.
There seem to be three factors driving a sale price more than double the average price and that is:
A quality stock and original Porsche 914
The unique eye-catching color of Olympic Blue
Two buyers who “have to have it.”
The BaT 1974 Olympic Blue Porsche 914 sold for $55,500 with most commentators agreeing that it was a terrific car, but are totally shocked by the sale price. There were over 50 bids in the final 35 minutes so there were clearly some committed buyers that drove this price to beyond normal value.
The Mecum Porsche 914 1.7 had the added bonus of being an all-original car that was unrestored with the low miles of 13,900. The final sale price of $80,850 is unmatched in the Porsche 914 world for a 1.7-liter car. This sale was thought to be as a result of the “red mist” that comes over bidders at a Monterey Auction that is being televised but the BaT sale seems to indicate there is something more to these big sales of Olympic Blue Porsche 914’s.
The true test will be to watch the upcoming sale by Auto Atlanta of an Olympic Blue Porsche 914, the foremost expert in 914’s of a 50,000 mile original Olympic Blue 1973 Porsche 914 2.0. The car is now on their web site priced at $49,500 which is a strong price for a Porsche 914 though this one is a 1973 2.0 liter. The combination of it being a 1973 with a 2.0-liter is the ideal combination, plus this car is original owner and in a unique color. The price for this combination seems right.
Air Brigade still questions the two auction sales of the 1.7 and 1.8 liter but the market has spoken. But, don’t believe all of a sudden your 914 is a $50,000 Porsche. You need an original, stock 914 in great condition and with a unique color and two buyers who “have to have it.”
