Driving the Texas Hill Country Rallye

Air-Cooled Porsches are flying over the hills of Texas right now in The Texas Hill Country Rallye. The Texas Hill Country Rallye is an annual air-cooled Porsche driving event that has become one of the largest and most popular events for the air-cooled Porsche community.

The Texas Hill Country Rallye is open to all air-cooled torsion bar Porsches produced between 1949 and 1989. The focus of the event is driving and socializing. The Rallye occurs every year in the Kerrville, Texas area using the Yo Ranch hotel. The Hill Country Rallye takes over the entire Yo Ranch Hotel with spill over to other local hotels. This year’s event started on Thursday, February 27 and will continue through Sunday, March 1, 2020.

Air-Cooled Porsches and their drivers will travel from across the country to attend this annual event. Several Air Brigade members will be in attendance this year including Allen and Beverly driving in from Florida in their 911 SC and Peter and Claudia from Asheville in their 912. I’ve heard of several other members from the Raleigh, NC area and the Florida Atlantic Coast also attending.

This year there is a new driving format. The drives will be self-guided using a Texas Hill Country route book that is provided. As the organizers describe there will no longer be bossy drive leaders or crack of dawn departures. You arrange your own drive groups and enjoy the Hill Country. The drive program consists of eight routes with detailed turn-by-turn directions.

Featured with the event is a track day experience at Harris Hill Raceway in San Marcos, Texas on the opening Thursday. It is great track experience since you are on the track with only air-cooled Porsches.

The other days of the event are filled with the driving tours throughout Texas Hill Country with the famous “Parking Lot” dinners and socials where participants gather around the cars to swap stories, fix their cars and have a beer. A banquet on Saturday night caps off the event before everyone heads for home on Sunday morning. Watch for photos and reports from attending Air Brigade members.
