Colors Drive the Prices at Amelia Auctions

The three big sales of Air-Cooled Porsches at the RM Sotheby Amelia Island auction both featured striking colors that definitely captured the money of the bidders.

Colors Drove the Prices of Air-Cooled Porsche at RM Soteby's Amelia Island

The top performer, selling for $280,000, 60% more than the high pre-sale estimate of $175,000 was an Orange 1965 Porsche 356C Cabriolet.

This orange over black 356 Cab was a paint-to-sample model. The attractiveness of this look was supported by multiple concours’ wins for the car. The high sale price was in spite of an ill-fitting driver’s side door.

The car had a recent restoration so it is surprising the door was off.

The unique color is certainly the reason that this car delivered the strong sales price.

The other big sales winner was a 1994 Porsche 911 Speedster in Guards Red with factory painted matching red Turbo Wheels that produced a striking look for the car.

This Speedster sold for $212,000, 17% more than the high pre-sale estimate of $175,000. Speedsters have been at many auctions lately selling in the range of $125,000 - $150,000 so RM Sotheby’s factored in the striking color combination into their pre-sale price estimate but still underestimated the value that a striking color combination can have at a live auction. The interior complimented the exterior look with a Tri-tone leather look of silver, grey and black with red accents throughout the interior. The desirability was further enhanced with the Speedster offering less than 12,000 miles.

The top seller among the Air-Cooled Porsches was a 1993 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR that sold for $750,000. This was within the pre-sale estimate price and was certainly helped along by its Speed Yellow exterior, race history and low production numbers (one of 49 produced).
